Guest Speaker
Dr. Pushpanathan Muthuirulan
Research Scientist
Department of Human Evolutionary Biology
FAS/Harvard University, US
Dr. Pushpanathan Muthuirulan is currently working as a Research Associate in the Harvard University, Cambridge, MA. The overarching goal of his research is to use functional genomic approaches to understand the genetic and developmental basis of stature variation and skeletal disorders (Developmental Dysplasia of Hip & Osteoarthritis) in humans.
For his Postdoctoral work at NICHD, National Institutes of Health (NIH), he developed a novel receptor-based GRASP method using CRISPR-cas9 and high resolution microscopy to map neurotransmitter receptors to brain neural circuits that involves visual motion processing in Drosophila.
For his Ph.D. at Department of Genetics, Madurai Kamaraj University, he had discovered a novel anti fungal Peptide, MMGP1 from marine metagenome and characterized its distinct anti fungal mechanism with an ultimate goal to combat opportunistic human fungal infections such as, candidiasis and aspergillosis.
He is the recipient of several awards such as
- Young Researcher Award in Microbiology by Venus International Research Foundation, India
- Fellows Award for Research Excellence (FARE), NIH, USA
- Three Minutes Talk-Science Communication Award, NICHD/NIH, USA
- Junior Scholarship Award, Lady Tata Memorial Trust, India.
- Meritorious Fellowship Award, UGC, India.
